New Zealand Vs India 1st T20 Highlights – Feb 6, 2019

1st T20I (N), India tour of New Zealand 2019, Watch IND v NZ HD video cricket highlights today – First twenty/20 international from Westpac Stadium, Wellington (New Zealand) Wednesday, 6th February 2019. The pitch at Westpac Stadium in Wellington remains a mystery, with its tendency to behave contrary to its appearance. The last T20I at the ground was a high-scoring affair, where the hosts defended 196 by just 12 runs against England. Dew could play a part, since it’s a night game, and the ball should slide on to the bat, as it was in the latter part of New Zealand’s chase in the final ODI.

ALL OVER: New Zealand win by 80 runs after India are bowled out for 139 – their biggest loss in terms of runs in T20Is. This is also the eighth time that India have been bowled out in the format. The final wicket goes to Darly Mitchell, who cleans up Yuzvendra Chahal and bags his maiden international debut.

15:42pm: And with yet another wicket – of Bhuvneshwar Kumar (caught Seifert b. Ferguson), India are 8 down for 132 and New Zealand close in on a victory. India need another 84 to win off the final seven deliveries and if they lose by more than 50, it will be their biggest loss by runs on T20Is.

WICKET: India seven down for 129. Oh well, it was just a matter of time before New Zealand closed in on a massive win. They take the next step with Southee getting Krunal Pandya, gloving a pull to wicketkeeper Tim Seifert. The ball takes the glove, then ricochetes off the helmet before entering Seifert’s gloves.

15:33pm: The fifty partnership is up between Dhoni and Pandya and it’s taken them 36 balls. India could have really done with this slightly earlier.

15:25pm: SIX from Krunal. The match may be far from India’s reach but at least Dhoni and Pandya are providing some entertainment. With two more games to go, Dhoni and Pandya can spend some time out there and gain further confidence. India 113 for 6, still need more than 100 runs off 30 balls.

14 overs gone, India 97 for 6. MS Dhoni tonks a SIX off Mitchell Santner to give India some cheers. The bigger picture however is the equation: 122 off 35. New Zealand look favourites to take a 1-0 lead in Wellington.

Another DOUBLE-WICKET over: India’s chase is falling apart here. Ish Sodhi dismissed Dinesh Karthik and Hardik Pandya in a space of four balls. Karthik slog sweeps to find Tim Southee at midwicket. Pandya on the other hand, gets off the mark with a boundary but carved a wide ball to Daryl Mitchell – who continues to have a wonderful debut – at deep extra cover. India in tatters at 77 for 6. 

WICKET: Second wicket in the over for Santner and New Zealand. Vijay Shankar manages a top edge and holes out at long on. India have lost their 4th wicket with 65 runs on the board. Surely, this is New Zealand’s game from here. MS Dhoni and Dinesh Karthik are the two new batsmen but you’ve got to wonder, this is a chase extremely tough for even their standard. India need another 151 off 62 balls. Asking rate has climbed to an ALARMING 14.6 an over.

WICKET: Santner cleans up Pant. Full and straight from the left-arm spinner, and quick too. Almost a Yorker and Pant has no answer. He was looking fidgety from the moment he walked out. Went for the leg side drive but it was too quick and full. India 64/3

14:54pm: An excellent first over from debutant Daryl Mitchell to conceded just three runs off his first over. India 64/2 after 8, need another 156 off 72. Asking rate: 13 an over.

WICKET: Knocked him over. Lockie Ferguson floors Shikhar Dhawan with a fiery Yorker, clocked at 150.8 km/h. He’s PUMPED! End of the Powerplay in which India have moved to 53/2.

FIFTY up for India: 18 runs off that last over. Vijay Shakar gets in the groove, takes Scott Kuggeleijn for two boundaries and a six. He played a crucial role for India A during their tour of New Zealand in November last year and now is the opportunity to better it for the big one. And just as we say, The FIFTY also comes up for India with a boundary from Dhawan.

BOOM! Dhawan gets his third SIX. Short ball from Ferguson and the India opener takes full toll, pulling it emphatically over square leg. New Zealand continue to bowl leg sidish to him. India 28 for 1 after 4 overs.

WICKET: First wicket down for India. Rohit Sharma can’t control a pull and hits Tim Southee to Lockie Ferguson at deep square leg, who takes a wonderful catch running in. India 18 for 1 in chase of 220. Vijay Shankar is the new man in.

India are away: After a quiet first nine balls, Shikhar Dhawan has found momentum. Back-to-back SIXES followed by a boundary, all on the leg side. The first pick up shot just beat Lockie Ferguson at deep square leg. The second was a lot squarer. The third one, a boundary was picked over the head of short fine leg. India 18/0 after 2 overs.

14:20pm: We’re back for the second innings. Rohit Sharma gets India off the mark with a tuck towards the leg side off Trent Boult. And that’s all the first over produced. Dhawan plays out five dot balls. India 1/0 after 1 over.

End of Innings: New Zealand post 219 for 6. Scott Kuggeleijn finishes off the innings in style, taking 12 runs off the final over. New Zealand would be mightly pleased with this effort. Remember, India’s top order hasn’t been in the best of nicks, as evident from the final two ODIs. It’ll requite quite an effort to chase these many runs down, despite Trent Boult missing from New Zealand’s line-up.

14:02pm: Scott Kuggeleijn is turning on quite a show. He picks up two boundaries and a six off the 19th over from Bhuvneshwar Kumar. New Zealand have crossed 200. The final over remains.

WICKETS: Colin de Grandhomme goes for 3 as Mohammed Siraj, the substitute fielder, takes a fine running catch. No surprises there, he’s come on for DK. Hardik follows it up with the wicket of Ross Taylor for 23. Khaleel takes the catch. India have come back strong here. New Zealand lose their sixth wicket for 191. 11 balls remain.

DROPPED: Can you believe it? Dinesh Karthik drops another one, and it’s another sitter. What a day he’s having. Two drops and a stunner. Wow, cricket sure does strange things to you. Full toss from Hardik Pandya and Taylor hits it straight to Karthik and deep midwicket where he puts it down.

Four overs left. New Zealand 169 for 4. How many more can they get? Ross Taylor is one of the two new batsmen at the crease and surely, he will be eyeing 200, or even more. The last 4 overs have fetched 42 runs. Another 42 and New Zealand would be mighty please with their effort. India hand the ball back to Bhuvneshwar. Can he get them another one here?

Back-to-back WICKETS: India slowly coming back into this as New Zealand lose Daryl Mitchell and Kane Williamson in quick succession. Dinesh Karthik takes a stunning catch in the deep to redeem himself, while the New Zealand skipper picks out Hardik Pandya running in from deep midwicket. He goes for 34 as New Zealand reach 165/4 in 15.1 overs.

15 overs gone and New Zealand are crusing. Kane Williamson has taken over after Seifert’s dismissal. He plays almost identical pull shots off Hardik Pandya to claim bacl-to-back sixes as a livid Rohit Sharma looks on. Everyu bowler has been taken for runs. New Zealand are peaking in at the right time here.

WICKET: Khaleel strikes. Full & straight and Seifert is OUT. Big wicket for India as New Zealand lose their second wicket for 134 in 12/4 overs. Seifert was going for everything but this was too full from Khaleel. Seifert comes across but misses it altogether. Huge relief for India. Seifert was looking set for a CENTURY.

DROPPED: Oh dear! Dinesh Karthik drops a sitter. And it’s Seifert whom, he puts down. It’s as easy as they get. High in the air, DK gets in position and spills it. MS Dhoni can hardly be seem fuming but today is one of those rare occassions. What a miss. Seifert goes on to add insult to injury with a FOUR and a SIX more off Chahal. He’s putting on a show tonight.

13:18pm: Tremendous hitting from Seifert. He scores his 4th SIX to bring up New Zealand’s 100. And guess how many overs it has taken then? 10.2 – 62 balls. Follows it up with another six – two contrastiong shots – First one almost a swat over square leg, followed by a wonderful inside out shot. New Zealand toying with the Indian attack.

10 Overs complete: We’re half-way through the innings and the first period has belonged to New Zealand. Seifert continues to score rapidly, gets his second boundary off a reverse sweep. New Zealand 97/1.

WICKET: Finally, some respite for India. Krunal Pandya gets the breakthrough as Munro falls. Tim Seifert began the over by getting to his fifty, but New Zealand lost Munro, who holed out in the deep. Flat from the left-arm spinner and Munro went big, just unable to clear the fielder stationed at long-on. New Zealand 88 for 1 after nine.

Well, folks. As cliched as this line is, it indeed is raining fours and sixes at the Westpac Stadium. After the first over, the sevent was the quietest with just 8 coming off it. But New Zealand restored normalcy in the next over, taking Hardik Pandya for 11. New Zealand 85/0 after 8 overs.

Six overs gone and New Zealand will be pretty pleased with the way they progressed in the Powerplay. Struggling throughout the five ODIs to put up a decent opening partnership, Munro and Seifert have added 66 off the first six overs – 11 runs an over. Hardik Pandya, who bowled the sixth, conceeded 12 in his first over.

12:52pm: 50 up for New Zealand in just 4.4 overs as Tim Seifert gets his second six. India Introduce spin. Krunal Pandya could have had his first wicket but Dhoni spilled a tough chance as the batsmen tried to carve it away to third man. Next ball, Seifert walks across and just ships the ball 15 rows into the stands towards the third man position. New Zealand rollicking at 54/0 after 5 overs.

12:48pm: Another big over for New Zealand, who collect 16 runs from the fourth over. Munro hammers back-to-back sixes off Khaleel Ahmed to take New Zealand to 44/0 after 4 overs. Scoring rate: a healthy 11 an over.

12:43pm: WHAM! Tim Seifert goes big. Collects a six and a four off Bhuvneshwar. Length ball from the India seamer and Seifert takes full toss of it, dispatching the ball in the stands towards mid-wicket. The nexl ball was slightly full and the opener drilled it down the ground. New Zealand gaining steam to reach 28 for 0 after 3 overs.

12:39pm: As expected, Munro is away. Back-to-back boundaries from the opener off Khaleel Ahmed to get New Zealand off the blocks. Khaleel has the tendency to leak runs. Case in point being the Australia T2os. Nine runs from the second over. New Zealand 13/0 after 2 overs.

12:35pm:  A nice, tidy, disciplined first over Bhuvneshwar Kumar as New Zealand score just 4 off it – all four being singles. A quiet start but expect that to change soon. New Zealand 4/0.

12:29pm: The National Anthems are done with and the players stride out to the ground. New Zealand’s openers are Colin Munro and Tim Seifert. Munro may have failed to leave behind impact in the ODIs, but T20 is the format that suits him more. Bhuvneshwar Kumar to bowl the first over. Seifert to take strike.

TRIVIA: Baroda’s Hardik Pandya and Krunal Pandya become only the third pair of siblings to feature in the same match for India in limited-overs international cricket. Surinder and Mohinmder Amarnath were the first, followed by Irfan and Yusuf Pathan, who also are from Baroda.

Captain’s Corner

Rohit Sharma (India captain): We’re bowling first. We have had a good record chasing. Gives us another opportunity to see how well we can bat second. Looks like a good pitch, as we saw in the game earlier so we are looking to set a target. Like I said on the 5th ODI, we wanted to bat second as there was some moisture on the pitch and challenge our batsmen. We managed to get a win. A lot of the guys who have played ODIs have gone back. A few guys like Rishabh and Krunal are back and we need to give them some chances, so it is important to give them a chance as well in the overseas conditions and see how they fare.

Kane Williamson (New Zealand captain): We were looking to have a bowl, based on the wicket on the other night. It’s important to assess the conditions. Mitchell makes his debut today. Some regular faces, but the two missing out are Bracewell and Neesham. A new squad brings some freshness. Every time you get an opportunity to represent your country is a great one this is a great opportunity against a fantastic opposition so we are looking forward to a really good series ahead

Pandya brothers are in the XI, the first time since Irfan Pathan and Yusuf Pathan played together for India. Daryl Mitchell makes his debut for New Zealand.

PREVIEW

After a thumping 4-1 win in the ODI series against New Zealand, India’s World Cup preparations and permutations and combinations – as stated by skipper Virat Kohli – is in auto-mode; so to find any context to the three-match T20I series against NZ as India conclude their Aus-NZ tour is quite tough. Still, players from both teams will have a lot to prove with the World Cup season on. Looking at the form of both the teams in T20Is, India are coming on the back of drawing a series against Australia and if it was not for rain in the 3rd T20I, India would have won the series. On the other hand, even though Black Caps beat Sri Lanka in the one-off home T20I match, they were whitewashed 3-0 in the UAE against Pakistan before that.

For New Zealand, who have a superior record against India in the format – winning six out of their eight matches – they will need to take that as confidence as try to forget their ODI series loss.

For India, with key players rested, it is once again audition call for the fringe players to stake claim for a World Cup spot -albeit in a different format.

India

The biggest talking point for India in the series will be Rishabh Pant. The Delhi wicketkeeper batsman had no place in the ODI series against New Zealand with MS Dhoni back in the squad and Dhoni’s good form with the bat has more or less assured the wicketkeeper batsman’s slot heading in to the World Cup. Pant can only hope to make a strong case as a batsman and this T20I series will be a great starting point for him. If Dhoni plays the series, Pant will get a fair run as batsman, meaning Dinesh Karthik will be unlucky to miss out. In the nets, Pant got an extened run hitting that he will bat at No.3 ahead of Dhoni and Shubman Gill.

In the bowling department, in the absence of Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammad Shami,Bhuvneshwar Kumar will have the assistance of either Khaleel Ahmed or Siddarth Kaul and of course Hardik Pandya, as the seam bowling allrounder. At this point Khaleel is the likely to travel to the World Cup as the backup pacer.

If both the wrist spinners – Yuzvendra Chahal and Kuldeep Yadav – play, spin-bowling allrounder Krunal Pandya, who made his debut in Australia will sit out. Rested Virat Kohli’s No.3 position ideally should have gone to Karthik – owing to his experience and likeness to make the World Cup squad – but Shubman Gill could get an extended run in the T20Is.

New Zealand

New Zealand will be without the services of the big-hitting Martin Guptill after failing to recover from a back injury sustained during the ODI series, while Trent Boult has been rested to manage workload. So for the 1st T20I, wicketkeeper batsman Tim Seifert could open with the incumbent opener Colin Munro – who himself will be looking at the T20I series as a final chance to cement his place for the World Cup squad after a poor run of form led to him being dropped in the ODI series.

Allrounder Daryl Mitchell has earned maiden call-up and it is likely that would make his debuts in the 1st T20I. Colin De Grandhomme, rested for the SL T20I should walk back in to the XI to occupy the second allrounder’s slot besides Doug Bracewell while Lockie Ferguson, rested for the final two ODIs against India, will be back to strengthen the bowling in Boult’s absence. Neesham could also find a place in XI after being added to the squad as Guptill replacement.
